Mechanical Systems Engineer | Rail | Contract\n\nThe Opportunity –\n\nFord & Stanley are supporting a rail client with the recruitment of a Mechanical Systems Engineer to support product quality assurance and return-to-manufacturer (RTM) activities.\n\nThis role has been created due to increased RMA (Return Material Authorisation) activity, requiring additional technical expertise to assess defective components and manage supplier returns. You will play a key role in ensuring product reliability and supporting continuous improvement initiatives.\n\nThe position suits an engineer who is comfortable working independently, applying strong technical judgement, and engaging with both internal teams and external suppliers.\n\nResponsibilities –\n\nAssess defective products and determine appropriate return or repair actions\nManage and process RMA activities in line with company procedures\nConduct detailed failure analysis and technical evaluations\nMaintain accurate records of defects, findings, and returns within internal systems\nGenerate customer quotations based on inspection and required remedial work\nLiaise with suppliers and manufacturers to resolve product issues\nIdentify recurring faults and support continuous improvement initiatives\nEnsure all processes comply with internal quality standards and procedures\n\nThe Candidate –\n\nEssential –\n\nStrong background in mechanical systems engineering\nExperience within the rail industry\nSolid understanding of train and vehicle systems and mechanical components\nExperience in defect analysis, product assessment, or failure investigation\nWorking knowledge of SAP or similar systems\nAbility to work independently with minimal supervision\nStrong analytical skills and attention to detail\nGood communication skills for working with internal teams and suppliers\n\nDesirable –\n\nExperience with gangway systems\nFamiliarity with RMA processes or return logistics\nExperience preparing customer quotations\nKnowledge of data tracking systems for defects and returns\n\nLocation\n\nDerby\n\nWorking Pattern –\n\nMonday to Thursday 8:00 - 16:30 \nMonday to Friday 8:00 - 13:00\n\nContract –\n\ninitial 3 months\n\nAbout Ford & Stanley –\n\nFord & Stanley Talent Services Group are in the business of people and performance.
